During the first week of February, the Dental Assisting Program welcomed guest speakers into the classroom and lab.
Dr. Emad Abdallah and Ms. Nicole Bostic covered Preclinical Orthodontics for the Dental Assisting students at STI. Dr. Abdallah is a local orthodontist, and Nicole Bostic, a 2016 graduate of STI, is an Expanded Functions Dental Assistant.
Dr. Abdallah presented an interesting lecture with video clips on types of malocclusion, diagnostic records, components of fixed appliances, and treatments.
Ms. Bostic completed the orthodontic experience with two mornings of labs where the DA students could place and remove orthodontic separators, bands, arch wires, and elastics on mannequins with braces. The DA students are now fully prepared to begin their clinical externship in an Orthodontist’s office.
Carolyn Gervasi, RDH, an independent consultant and professional educator, discussed oral hygiene instructions to STI Dental Assisting students. Ms. Gervasi’s presentation included the benefits of alternative flossing methods, scientific research results, clinical indications for use, and proper patient techniques. Travis Broussard won a complimentary Water Pik unit.
