Historical Background

In 1960 representatives from the geographical area, now known as the Southeastern Regional School District, discussed with the Massachusetts Department of Education the feasibility of establishing a regional vocational technical school district. The Division of Vocational Education did a comprehensive study of the area and in September of 1961 recommended to the Massachusetts Department of Education that such a regional school district should be established. The school district comprises the City of Brockton and the towns of East Bridgewater, Easton, Foxborough, Norton, Mansfield, Sharon, Stoughton, and West Bridgewater.
In June of 1963, a planning board composed of representatives from the district’s communities published their original proposal for the school. The district communities, the Massachusetts Department of Education, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Emergency Finance Board approved the proposal during the summer of 1963. The Southeastern Regional School District broke ground on July 2, 1965 and completed construction just prior to opening on September 6, 1967. The school was officially dedicated on May 19, 1968.
The Practical Nurse Program was the first post-secondary program at the Southeastern Technical Institute. The program was originally approved as the Brockton Vocational School of Practical Nursing by the Board of Registration in Nursing on March 25, 1964 with the understanding that it would be located in Brockton until the proposed Southeastern Regional School District building had completed construction. On September 11, 1967 the Practical Nurse Program was transferred in name, location, and administration from Brockton to the Southeastern Regional School District. The date of the first Practical Nurse graduation was on March 26, 1968.
The Dental Assisting and Medical Assisting Programs began operation in 1967, the Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Technician (HVAC) Program started in 1996. The Culinary Arts Program opened in 2014; the Cosmetology program was added in 2015. The Electricity and Plumbing programs enrolled their first classes beginning in 2018. The two newest STI programs, Machine Tool Technology (Advanced Manufacturing) began enrolling classes in 2019 and Metal Fabrication and Joining Technologies enrolled classes beginning in 2021. In January 2021 the Medical Assisting program was expanded to include an evening hybrid option.
